In order to avoid skin irritation you should take extra care if you have problems with urine leakage. In order to clean yourself you should use washcloth. After that, let the skin to dry on its own.
You should avoid douching and frequent washing because that they trouble the natural defenses of the body that fights against bladder infections.
You should protect your skin from the urine with using a barrier cream like cocoa butter or petroleum jelly.
You should make the toilet more comfortable with moving any furniture or carpets that can cross over or even collide with on the way to the toilet or using night light to reduce the risk with having proper light in the toilet.
People that are having functional incontinence should have bedpan in their bedroom or to install elevated toilet seat or to extend the bathroom door.
There are three types of urinary incontinence and they are:
-Overflow incontinence – this is when the body has trouble to empty the bladder completely and that can bring along constant odor of the urine and it can be caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles (birth or surgery), menopause, urinary stones, infections of the urinary tract, overactive bladder, constipation, enlarged prostate.
-Urge incontinence – this happens when there is hyperactive bladder or overactive bladder and it can cause sudden and intense urge to urinate and that can cause involuntary loss of urine.
-Stress incontinence – This happens when there is pressure on the bladder by physical activities like coughing, laughing, sneezing, exercising and jumping.
You should understand that incontinence is just a symptom and not a disease!
